Description
"La Cuadra is simply the best English-language magazine of cultural commentary, political analysis, creative non-fiction, reportage, philosophical rumination and scatology that one can find in Guatemala." Rocco Dooley, Jr.
La Cuadra magazine that has been in print in Antigua, Guatemala since co-publishers Michael Tallon and John Rexer railed at the world over a bottle of mezcal eight years ago, bemoaning the fact that most magazines up north had become timorous, tiny things, and as the dawn light hit the door frame of the bar, they promised one another to write something unafraid themselves.
Nearly a decade later, the're still at it.
This issue features the Surly Bartender's take on the situation in Ukraine and, in particular, how right-wing America has completely lost control and fallen in love with their inner dictator, even if he's half way around the world.
Also returning this issue is Bill McGowan with ruminative story on his travels in China a few years back in Discussing Deng.
James R. Tallon, Jr., an insider in the world of health care reform in the United States, continues his running series on the Affordable Care Act as it manifests in 2014. If you want to stay current with the debate, there's no better source of information out there.
Our artists this month are a group of men and women who live in our adoptive country of Guatemala. They call themselves C.A.C.A., but their stuff sure doesn't stink. To see what these painters are doing is, in and of itself, reason for a visit to Antigua. After you buy this mag, go buy a ticket.
Our March / April issue also features an poem by Nelson Lunding that packs enough punch to knock the teeth out of a cynic half a mile down the road. As a special feature of this e-zine, we're also running a few more chapters in "The Adventures of Pissy Jesus." These stories, written by Eddie, Jesus' business manager, have been culled from a recently discovered new Gospel that had been violently suppressed by the Council of Nicea on account of its portrayal of Jesus Christ as a rather short-tempered, sharp-tongued man not entirely sure about that whole crucifixion thing. We stand by its utter authenticity.
This issue also features work by the rising star, Adam Wilcox, as well as the smoldering ashes of our Editor-in-Chief, Michael Tallon who spins a yarn this time around about an Elvis-impersonating Maharajah and nearly murdering his chauffeur all in a matter of a day.
Full stop, this is another great issue of La Cuadra. Well worth the four clams. But we would say that, wouldn't we...
Cheers and all the best. Thanks for giving us a shot. If you like us, let us know by writing a review! If you REALLY like us, tell your friend!
Thanks,
Mike Tallon and John Rexer
All in all, it's one hell of an issue and we hope you come back for more.
Enjoy!
Mike and John
