Description
Storm clouds are gathering around Max Blake. The retired federal marshal, who left the Arizona Territories following the death of the infamous hanging judge to make a new home for his family on the Crooked River Gorge in Oregon, is running a successful cattle operation on a sprawling ranch in the High Desert. But cold souls with long memories know his reputation, and trouble soon comes calling in the form of a local sheriff with ambitions of wealth and power and a renegade killer with a penchant for hard liquor and pretty women. The inevitable collision forces Max to leave his Crooked River ranch -- and this time, he won't be returning.
Here what the critics are saying:
"It's great to have Florence back in the saddle again with another of his fine Max Blake series: sharp descriptions, great dialogue, classic Western plot. Readers will enjoy the ride."
-- Bob LeRoy, American Western scholar
"In the best Western tradition, Florence keeps the pace fast with unexpected twists at every turn. He's also shaped the books around a character who's as honorable as he is hardy, as courageous as he is colorful. When Max Blake straps on his Colt Peacemaker, two things are sure to happen: Justice is going to get done, and the reader is going to have fun."
Mike Connell, retired newspaper editor
