Description
An intelligence failure can have dire consequences.
Humiliated by Israeli and U.S. successes in wrecking much of Iran's nuclear enrichment facilities and killing many in leadership positions, Iran's enraged mullahs want revenge. They see a nuclear bomb as necessary to achieve their desired goal to remove the hated Israel from the face of the Earth. The Iranian bomb program has been set back but the mullahs are more determined than ever to make up for lost time. The Iranian Republican Guard had been able to quickly hide a quantity of enriched uranium before it could be bombed.
Believed to be spies, inspectors from the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have been removed from Iran and told not to return. With assistance from North Korean technicians, their enriched uranium will be further processed to build nuclear weapons. Knowing that it will still take more time, previously stolen nuclear material from Pakistan will also be used to build a bomb.
With the overthrow of Iran's ally Assad in Syria, a new regime is in place, one more friendly toward the West and even open to possibly normalizing relations with Israel. Iran's religious hard-liners feel they must act forcefully, and soon. A small number of them secretly form a powerful group within Iran's theocracy and hatch a plan to destroy Israel. They undertake a project so secret it has to be kept from their own top leadership. In Lebanon, many of Hezbollah's leaders have been killed by the Israelis. Some of the few remaining want revenge and are willing to assist Iran with their plan.
The world's attention is focused on the turmoil in the Ukraine, Gaza, and much of the Middle East. After the bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities, the U.S. president and many other world leaders are convinced Iran is now years away from building a bomb.
Fortunately, talented Madeline (Maddy) Teagan at the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), knows the damage done to Iran's nuclear program was not as complete as some had announced. And, that they will recover and accelerate their secret enrichment and bomb making program. But she will have to fight a stubbornly entrenched and male-dominated intelligence bureaucracy to prevent disaster.
