Description
In the contemporary world of healthcare and human service work, understanding and addressing burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma is an issue of growing import. While these terms are colloquially used, they are frequently misunderstood. The result is often a waste of organizational time and resources due to inexpertly aimed attempts to remediate the psychological costs of caring. This brief is based on an academic literature review performed by this author that was focused on the topics of professional burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma. It utilizes source material from original theoreticians and researchers on each topic in an attempt to more clearly define, compare, and contrast each issue. Additionally, a model for differential diagnosis of each condition is proposed which utilizes both a medical disease and psychoanalytic approach. Finally, utilizing said diagnostic model, evidence-based interventions are explored and briefly discussed. As a note to the reader, it must be understood that the tone of this brief is clinical and academic in nature with the aim of conveying a large amount of information as succinctly as possible. It does not represent a consummate "self-help" guide to managing one's own burnout, compassion fatigue, or vicarious trauma. Instead, it is aimed at creating a foundational understanding of these issues.
