Miss Betsy Lake has come to Colorado Hills intending to make a new start. The town has exploded with miners, ranchers, and all sorts of rough and tumble people. Betsy has never worked officially as a teacher, but that will be her job in the town. Surely things will not be terrible, and the students will learn from her. Right? She's there only to work and make a life for herself away from her stepfather, who has made life difficult for her. With nothing left at home, Betsy will reinvent herself out West.

Betsy settles in at Miss Kitty's rooming house and begins to understand how to relate to the children in this town, which is nothing like her home in St. Louis. When one of the boys asks her to help him to get home, she eagerly agrees. Max is adorable, and he has a genuine fear of snakes. When Betsy brings Max home, the handsome business owner, Glen, catches her eye. She's not less interested when she learns that he owns the town's saloon, and is an accomplished businessman.

But a saloon owner and a teacher should never court, much less fall in love. Their budding relationship could put Betsy's job at risk. Glen is romantic and kind; he seems like the perfect man. Yet, he lost his wife, and his son desperately needs mothering. Can Betsy risk her job in her pursuit of love? Can she be sure she isn't a replacement for Glen's late wife?
