Description
There's a hanging on the docket in Last Chance, Colorado, and the locals want to see Zeke Josephson swinging from the end of a noose.
Zeke's been caught red-handed pulling a stage coach robbery, and his lengthy history as a horse thief, criminal and general scourge of the territory made his date with the noose a no-brainer.
But Lottie Cassidy has other plans for Zeke. The widowed mail order bride owns a ranch with a live gold mine on it, but she needs someone to help her work the mine to reap its full benefits. And Lottie intends to capitalize on an old town law that will save Zeke from the noose if any of the women in Last Chance claim him in marriage.
For Lottie, a marriage of convenience in which she reforms her outlaw husband is just what the doctor ordered for her to get cheap labor to work the mine. And if Zeke bolts or the marriage fails for whatever reason, Zeke will find his neck back in the noose.
Once Lottie stakes her marriage claim, the calamities follow at a fast and furious pace. The twists and turns in this fast-paced Western romance include some sudden changes of heart between Zeke and Lottie, a revelation of new riches in the mine, a mine collapse and no less than two prison breaks.
And, of course, the wedding itself.
In short, there's something for everyone in The Mail Order Bride and the Scoundrel, especially for fans of the genre who enjoy strong women characters of the mail-order bride variety. The series also marks the arrival of a strong new writer in the genre as Lucille Chisum makes an auspicious, noteworthy debut, one that will turn readers into fans who will want to follow her work for years to come.
