Description
When a killer strikes close to home...
DI Ted Darling doesn't like coincidences. There are too many for comfort surrounding his latest case. They're spilling over into his private life too, when toxic family secrets are uncovered.
A serial killer appears to be targeting vulnerable elderly people in care homes and despatching them in the most cynical way. Ted and his team are struggling to get a lead on who the killer really is. It doesn't help that his newest team member is adding to his problems, rather than helping him to solve them.

Then an unexpected phone call brings devastating news for Ted and his long-term partner, Trevor.
When I'm Old and Grey is the latest instalment in this popular crime series. Look out for more titles in the series.
What the readers say:
When I'm Old and Grey is the third novel in what is becoming a great (and hopefully continuing) series featuring Ted Darling, a really good DI, good and compassionate leader, with a touch of vigilante thrown in for good measure. And the Darling character is a good one. Throw in a generic psychopath playing the part of serial killer and you've got a decent but predictable thriller.
Overall, the story was simple, neat and effective. The writing was good, the characters far more developed than those normally encountered in this genre, the action fast paced and the outcome satisfactory. I will definitely be continuing this series.
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, and so I was pretty sure I'd like this one too, but actually, it's the best one yet for me. Although the plot structure is not all that different from the first two, this one was a bit twistier, a bit more puzzling and the characters I have grown to love, especially the secondary characters were all that much more developed. I am especially fond of Bizzie and Steve, and if course I am besotted with Trev, but who isn't? For me, the fact that with each book, we get to learn something more about the main protagonists too is great character development and gives them all more depth. The storyline is a tough one: elderly people being poisened in old people's homes and even in hospital. The first case reported is Ted's (DI Darling's) own grandmother, which makes his involvement a bit difficult, but after three other deaths by similar gruesome means have been uncovered, he cannot take a back seat any longer. As a reader, I love trying to follow the puzzle and seeing if I can get to the solution before the detectives, but this time, I didn't! It was great! I was totally riveted to the book and it only took me two days to read it. I should also add that L M Krier's writing is noticeably more accomplished in this book and it was really well edited too. This is a police procedural series that I will be reading for as long as Ms Krier keeps writing them! I am totally hooked!
What a super read. This series of books featuring D.I. Ted Darling just gets better and better. With each one we learn a little more about the characters and what makes them tick. This time we discover some hidden secrets about both Ted and Trev's families which come as a complete surprise and I'm looking forward to more developments in the future. The author has the knack of making the reader care about them both and that takes a lot of skill. The plot is fast paced and gripping from the start. I could hardly put it down and read it over two sittings. As well as trying to catch a killer who is dispatching elderly people who are in care homes D.I Darling has to cope with an insubordinate and difficult addition to his team. I'm also impressed at the research the author must have put in to learn about poisonous plants and their effects. A worthy 5 stars.
