Description

'What a treat to turn to Teresa Waugh. One of her great talents is to convey passion and anguish through irony and restraint... ' - The Literary Review

Sylvia Appleby is lonely and dissatisfied with her life.

She left her ex-husband Frederick, a clergyman and a drunk, some years ago now and hasn't seen him since.

Her two children have grown up and moved out, leaving her to deal with her awful mother who keeps threatening to descend upon her from Manchester at any moment.

Her only consolation is her loyal dog, Prophecy, but even he cannot fill the huge void in her life.

So when she sees Mr Hardcastle's advertisement for a cook and housekeeper at his beautiful home in Sussex, she jumps at the opportunity for a fresh start and a renewed sense of purpose in her life.

However, it's not long before Sylvia realises that she's not the only one with a complicated past.

She soon finds herself tangled up in Mr Hardcastle's own problems - his turbulent relationship with his money-grabbing daughter, Jocelyn, not to mention his equally worrying relationship with alcohol.

Is Sylvia simply doomed to repeat the past?

Or is it still possible for her to find her happily ever after?

Syliva's Lot is a touching story about family, forgiveness and how you should never give up on finding true love.

Praise for Teresa Waugh

'Delicious, dry wit.' - The Daily Telegraph on Painting Water

'It is always satisfying to read a novel as entertaining as this one - the writing is light, crisp and remorselessly observant.' Kate Saunders from The Independent on An Intolerable Burden

'What a treat to turn to Teresa Waugh. One of her great talents is to convey passion and anguish through irony and restraint... A small triumph, translucent with humour, perception and sympathy.' - The Literary Review on Song at Twilight

'A deft, comic portrayal... sharp-eyed fun.' Miranda Seymour of The Standard on Waterloo Waterloo
