Description

Alicia Langdon is a woman with a dark secret.

Born into Society, she struggled against the hardships of the mining camps during the outbreak of Gold Fever in California.

Desolate following the death of her mother, the grief-stricken Alicia, with no hopes of her father ever returning, eagerly hopes to make a home for herself in Valley Hall with her grandfather.

Seventeen years old and desperate for love, she falls in love with the handsome Robert Langdon and they are married within a week.

A marriage that is disastrous from beginning to end. A marriage that Langdon used to his own benefit. A marriage that left Alicia with nothing but a scarred future.

With the ending of her marriage comes a new beginning.
One fraught with its own troubles, but with the security of her friendship with Chen Kai-Tsu.
and an orphan to consider, Alicia fights through her past demons and meets each obstacle as they arise. Despite being on the run from the vigilantes.

The trio flee San Francisco and begin a new life in a remote ranch near the High Sierras, owned by Colonel Jack Cornish.

Alicia is taken in by Letitia Cooper and drawn into attending the regular soirees, where Alicia begins to understand the complicated nature of the new life she has entered into.

Slowly, through her skills and good nature, Alicia settles into the comforts the ranch offers. It is a safe haven for the three of them and she is increasingly drawn towards the brusque yet magnetic charms of the Cornishman who owns Tresco.

However, her past rises up to haunt her and unable to flee the past in her mind, it becomes a barrier. Until it catches up with her.

Faced with the choice of retaining their comfort at the ranch or living the life of fugitives, Alicia must face her demons...
