Description
London, 1741.
Syrena Tricksy's mother is determined to find her a wealthy husband, and so she trains her in the art of deception.
As soon as she is old enough, Syrena's mother sends her off to serve as a maid for a wealthy mistress named Mrs. Martin, commanding her to use any tricks possible to attract one of the rich members of the household for her lover.
Immediately, Syrena is disgusted with the formality of her new family, and begs to be sent home.
But then she meets Vardine, who promises her all the wealth and riches she could as for.
Syrena soon discovers Vardine has no estate but she has already fallen for him.
Desperate to be with Vardine she escapes from the Martins household and finds a new Lady to serve.

Eliza Haywood (c. 1693 - 25 February 1756), born Elizabeth Fowler, was an English writer, actress and publisher. An increase in interest and recognition of Haywood's literary works began in the 1980s. Described as "prolific even by the standards of a prolific age", Haywood wrote and published over seventy works during her lifetime including fiction, drama, translations, poetry, conduct literature and periodicals (Blouch 7). Haywood is a significant figure of the 18th century as one of the important founders of the novel in English. Today she is studied primarily as a novelist.
