The book begins with Tommy Stubbins, the narrator of the story, trying to search for Doctor Dolittle after he finds an injured squirrel. Hugh Lofting was a British writer and civil engineer. Lofting is now best known for writing the Doctor Dolittle books which he actually began working on while serving in the British Army during World War I.
