Thomas, Andy, and Lars are three boys coming of age in a small Western town in the late 1800's. Their staid and quiet lives are interrupted when they discover a covert scheme by some hired bandits to rob the local train. They devise an ill conceived plan to relieve the train robbers of their loot; a plan that would free them from the drudgery of their small town lives and elevate them to a respected and hopefully wealthy manhood. Complications arrive when circumstances force them to include Crazy Man Fielder, a retired bounty hunter, as a partner. Unknown to the boys and their new partner is that another group of dangerous men have the same plan as they do. Fielder works his way into the boy's trust as he uses them to advance his own interests. As incidents become increasingly more serious for the boys, they began to rely more and more on Fielder for advice and direction. On the day of the plan, the boys have placed their trust and their lives in the hands of Fielder, a mistake that Fielder believes will leave them with a valuable lesson. It will be a lesson that they will remember the rest of their lives, if they survive.
