Description
May Jordan, after the death of her father, journeys back into her roots through free verse poetry of growing up on the other side of the tracks in a small urban town in the 50's and 60's. Her poems are evocative of her own experiences, but also speak to large issues like loss, fear, death and love that all readers can relate to.
The heart of her book, "Dreaming of Horses", is an account of a painful childhood abduction of her brother and herself in the summer of '64.
She believes that people are more similar than different when it comes to dealing with personal anguish. She thinks most people are unable to talk about their pain that forms and shapes their lives. She feels that this isolation sometimes cuts them off from loving themselves and others. She is convinced that poetry can be a tool for healing some of the deepest parts of the human soul.
