Description
On May 31st, 1889, in southwestern Pennsylvania, the South Fork Dam gave way. Millions of tons of water roared down the valley, destroying everything in the water's path until it overwhelmed the City of Johnstown, killing more than 2,200 people and leaving thousands more homeless. This disaster capped an extraordinary year in the life of a young woman named Katherine O'Neill. Born in New York City in 1871, Katherine would probably have lived out her life there if not for the schemes and crimes of her father, Sean, and her uncle, Daniel O'Connor. When Katherine loses her mother in the spring of 1888 and she and her young siblings are virtually abandoned by their alcoholic father, Katherine goes on a quest to find her way out of poverty. This quest leads her to the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, up in the mountains, some ten miles distant from Johnstown. It's where the money is... Pittsburgh money; with an exclusive membership including "robber barons" Andrew Carnegie, Henry Frick and Andrew Mellon. I've been told I'm a pretty girl, Katherine reasons, and I'm nobody's fool. Perhaps, just perhaps, If I could find a proper situation at that club, I could find a man... a relationship... where I can improve my economic circumstances. If it could help me and Liam and Maggie, it would be worth it. I'll do whatever it takes.
