Description
Charlie Clarke, the mayor of Dudley, bedecked in full mayoral robes and chain of office, glided up the school drive in his glistening chauffeured limousine on a sunny morning in July 1965 especially to wish the new head, his staff and all the pupils 'bon voyage' in the brand new school. Popular opinion began to turn against it even though it held its own despite many of its pupils having social and/or learning difficulties. It. battled on for twenty five years notching up many successes but sadly it could not shake off the reputation of being Dudley's 'worst' secondary school.
The name changed to Mons Hill School when comprehensive education was introduced but still the aura remained. With the advent of SATs (Standard Assessment Tests) and League Tables the school began to flounder and it closed in 1990.
The author taught there from beginning to end and his wish is to reveal to you the gamut of emotions and experiences
its members shared and hopefully come to see how wrong the cynics were.
