Description
After using the experimental thought projector to force Vitnell to return to Alpha Proxima III with Sarina and Wantely together with the mysterious D weapon the planet is beset with spot fires which spread through the forests and under-brush. It is assumed to be the prelude to the invasion from Golgar and distracts everyone from their invasion preparations.
Torrential rain puts out the fires, but not the tiny incendiary devices which caused the fires and apparently they can last in perpetuity. Axstar proposes to fight a guerrilla type war against the invaders, but is voted down by Jaro and the others.
Jaro's idea is to consult the Neolynx who recommends the population evacuate to the Blue Moon and then join the Neolynx in a Stasitin induced Sleep for two or three hundred years, after which the Neolynx would wake them and they could resume their lives.
Axstar's response was to call for a vote which went against Jaro's idea by virtue of Axstar's casting vote. But Jaro persisted and eventually convinced the others to sack Axstar as Chairman.
Axstar resigned and decided to remain on the planet after everyone else escaped to the Blue Moon; in fact the Neolynx had insisted that he do so.
Axstar and Laura become separated temporarily, and Axstar has an accident in his helicopter, injuring a knee, and that is where Laura finds him.
Vitnell, Sarina and Wantely hear back end of a radio broadcast from Golgar warning everyone to leave the planet as there is a nuclear rocket heading their way, and also Axstar's and Laura's broadcast to Golgar telling them that they choose to remain on the planet together, and for the Authorities not to blame themselves for their demise.
Vitnell, Sarina and Wantely decide to see if they can help, so they load a Jarobeam onto the space-ship and blast off into space.
Axstar and Laura, arms tightly around each other, wait for the expected atomic blast. Then the heavens explode in a riot of color.
