Synopsis
Nova Winters arrives in a small sleepy fishing village where they hope to live until her daughter Connie finishes high school. They are accustomed to moving, as they have had to cover their tracks many times. This time will hopefully be a new beginning for them, and they have both pledged to rein in their mystical powers. Nova is very protective of her daughter, as all she wants for her is a normal life as possible.
Connie starts the term at Kirkwood High in the nearby town. It's by far the roughest school she has ever attended, and there she is targeted by some of the school tyrants who are unaware of her powers. Victoria Ford, the new head teacher, has radical plans to use cutting edge technology to take the ramshackle school, full of unpromising students, all the way to the top of the achievement league table. She has the help of her parents, her father a retired government intelligence officer, and her mother, a highly regarded doctor and scientist.
The staff and pupils have no idea what is in store for them. Victoria and her parents are among the very few who have witnessed and used technology to alter a person's behaviour and thoughts - in effect 'brainwashing'. (This however had gone tragically wrong for Victoria's twin sister.)
When Nova meets Victoria, she senses immediately that all is not what it seems. She is intrigued and is tempted to use her skills to find a reason for her doubts, but she made a promise to her daughter not to cross over to the dark underworld which calls to her. Connie however is forced to use her own powers to protect herself.
Connie meets the good looking but notorious Craig Travis. Nobody messes with the tough Travis family, but the heart breaking reality is that behind closed doors Craig's life is horrendous. She and Craig become close, much to the disappointment of Victoria Ford, who doesn't want an exceptional student becoming involved with a hopeless case like Craig. Victoria decides to use him as a guinea pig and starts him on her special 'program'.
As Nova starts up her own business and attracts attention from the townspeople, (especially her handsome landlord and his former lover), Nova's beloved and talented sister arrives to stir things up. Shocking events follow, and together they must take unusual measures in what becomes a matter of life and death.
