This is a major biography, originally in two volumes, of the 19th Century British diplomat and politician Stratford Canning (1786-1888). Canning made decisive contributions to the political shape of Europe from the Napoleonic wars to the Crimean War and beyond. He had extensive relations with the Sultan and senior officials of Ottoman Turkey, and played a role in the independence of Greece, the Crimean War against Russia and in political reforms in Turkey, ensuring fair treatment of Christian and Jewish minorities. He also held diplomatic posts in the United States, Switzerland (at the time of the establishment of the Swiss Federation) and Russia.

His biographer has relied largely on material from Canning's private library and particularly on his correspondence and his Memoirs, which he himself wrote towards the end of his life.
