When a railroad work crew building a line from Raton, New Mexico Territory to Trinidad, Colorado suffers raids and equipment damage, Ben and his men are sent to provide security and put a stop to the depredations. At the construction site, Ben discovers that the situation is much more complex than he thought, because the raids are being blamed on the Ute Indians who live on a reservation in the area. Not only must he protect the railroad men, but he must prevent a war with the Indians.
