On Why I Wrote this Book...
I'm not an expert on job hunting, unemployment trends or careers. I don't do career coaching on the side, nor do I plan to start.
I am simply someone who was surprised by how bad being out-of-work (for over eight months) felt. As my confidence and mood plummeted, I turned to books and devoured any memoirs that featured a long stretch of unemployment. There were not a lot, but the ones I found helped me feel less alone in my struggles.
After I began working again, I wanted to share my story, because I think we can learn from others. But then I thought, "hmm, learn from otherS" with the emphasis being on the plural.
What if I could create a website and then a book that would tell of other people's struggles, triumphs and advice on being out-of-work and how they returned to earning a living. Each person's story could bring their unique challenges, including:
- physical limitations
- looking for a first job ("must have job experience")
- trying to find a job over the age of 40, 50, 60... etc.
- wanting or needing to change careers
- looking for work after being fired
- and more
I put out a call for people to share their stories, asked what they would do differently and what advice they could give to others. I have woven their stories together, captured in interviews and essays into this book in the hope that it helps someone else who is having a rough time of being out-of-work.
