Description
An exciting biography of a young man who was one of the first white people to see and experience life on the Great Plains, Red Crow's Brother describes Hugh Monroe's second year living with the great Blackfeet confederacy of tribes. Hiring on as an engage with the Hudson Bay Company and assigned to work in the great company's Mountain Fort on the edge of the Great Plains, he was given the task of living with the great Blackfeet Confederacy to learn their language and way of life. Not yet 18 years of age in 1816, young Hugh lives as an honored guest - an "almost-son" - of Lone Walker, chief of the Pikuni branch of the Blackfeet.
Quickly becoming a close friend - and almost-brother - of Red Crow, the son of Lone Walker, Hugh is given the name of Rising Wolf. Together with Red Crow, even as he follows his instructions to attract Indian tribes living west of the Rocky Mountains, Rising Wolf experiences the wild and dangerous land that he has come to love. Fighting off enemy war parties and exploring lands never before seen by any other white man, Rising Wolf and Red Crow experience more adventure in a month than many explorers see in an entire year.
Originally published in 1934, Gold Dust is the 34th book published by James Willard Schultz. Filled with battles on the high passes of the Backbone-of-the-World (the Rocky Mountains) and on the plains, mystery and adventure, this late novel of the great author of novels on the Blackfeet and the fur trade brings alive a time long lost.
James Willard Schultz (1859 - 1947) knew the Montana frontier well. Arriving at Fort Benton in Blackfeet territory in 1877, he spent decades as a trader, rancher and hunting guide in what is now western Montana. Living among the Blackfeet, he came to consider one of them. Later in life, after the death of his dear Pikuni wife Natahki, he began to write, eventually publishing 37 books, many of them novels about his friends, the Blackfeet Indians, and other adventures of the Montana territory. This new digital edition of Red Crow's Brother features a special introduction and footnotes by Bryan R. Johnson to provide detailed background on Blackfeet culture and history in this exciting tale of adventure set in the old West. Originally published in 1927, Red Crow's Brother was his 27th book.
