Description
Glacier National Park in the northern Rocky Mountains of Montana is one of the jewels of the American national park system. The wildlife, mountains, lakes, waterfalls, forests and, of course, glaciers attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Long before white people first saw this magnificent area, however, it was an important resource for the Piegan branch of the Blackfeet Indians. Here, they hunted, gathered medicinal plants and made lodgepoles to replace those worn with use as part of their travois to pull their possessions throughout their extensive territory.
With the loss of these lands to the American government to create the park, the Blackfeet also learned that the tradition names for many of the geographic locations had been changed to suit the white people. Proud of the culture and traditions, a group of Blackfeet who had grown up during "buffalo days" when the Lakes-Inside region was still under their control gathered together and, with the assistance of their friend James Willard Schultz to record the original names. Signposts of Adventure is the result, providing the names - and the stories behind the names - of locations in Glacier National Park as the Blackfeet and the Kutenai Indians knew them.
Originally published in 1926, Signposts of Adventure is the 23rd book published by James Willard Schultz. Filled with exciting stories about this part of the Backbone-of-the-World (the Rocky Mountains), it brings to modern readers the life and times of a time long ago.
James Willard Schultz (1859 - 1947) knew the Montana frontier well. Arriving at Fort Benton in Blackfeet territory in 1877, he spent decades as a trader, rancher and hunting guide in what is now western Montana. Living among the Blackfeet, he came to consider one of them. Later in life, after the death of his dear Pikuni wife Natahki, he began to write, eventually publishing 37 books, many of them novels about his friends, the Blackfeet Indians, and other adventures of the Montana territory. This new digital edition of Signposts of Adventure features a special introduction and footnotes by Bryan R. Johnson to provide detailed background on Blackfeet culture and history.
