Description
It is early in the 19th century and the buffalo have suddenly disappeared from Blackfeet territory. What could be the cause? Are the gods angry, for some reason, with the tribe? And what can be done? This rousing novel, told from the point of view of Apsi, a young man of the Pikuni tribe of the Blackfeet, follows a group of just four men - two elderly sacred pipe holders and their grandsons - as they make a quest to the far south to appeal to the mysterious feathered serpent god to return the buffalo to their land. Through mountains and across mountains and the killing heat of deserts, Apsi and the others encounter many other tribes - some enemies, some friendly - as they come ever closer to the land of the Plumed Snake!
Originally published in 1924, Plumed Snake Medicine is the 21st book published by James Willard Schultz. Filled with adventure and danger in the Rocky Mountains and the southwest desert country, it brings to modern readers the life and times of long ago.
James Willard Schultz (1859 - 1947) knew the Montana frontier well. Arriving at Fort Benton in Blackfeet territory in 1877, he spent decades as a trader, rancher and hunting guide in what is now western Montana. Living among the Blackfeet, he came to consider one of them. Later in life, after the death of his dear Pikuni wife Natahki, he began to write, eventually publishing 37 books, many of them novels about his friends, the Blackfeet Indians, and other adventures of the Montana territory. This new digital edition of Plumed Snake Medicine features a special introduction and footnotes by Bryan R. Johnson to provide detailed background on Blackfeet culture and history.
