Description

An Israelite father; a Canaanite mother. A young boy is caught between two worlds during the time of Samuel the Seer. Captured by the Sea Peoples during a battle, he is enslaved and taken to the Philistine stronghold of Gath where he meets two young girls who will shape his future. All the while, he remembers his friend, a beautiful Canaanite girl, and wonders whether he will ever see her or his parents again.

From the Prologue:

My name is Eliel, and I am the son of Yochanan, who was the son of Peretz, who was the son of Miklat. I do not know the names of my fathers before that. At least I cannot recall them. Though some may doubt it, I do know that I am a son of Ya'acov.

Long before anyone had heard of the sheepherder from Bethlehem named David and sang his praises, I had struck my blade against Amalekite raiders who attacked my home. I had faced the Sea Peoples multiple times and had been wounded in battle against them. I fought Lahmi the Giant of Gath, one of the champions of the Sea Peoples, and lived to tell the tale.

Long before anyone had acclaimed David as king, I had even withstood the terror of the sorceresses of Endor and put an end to sorcery in Israel, at least for a time. My body bears the scars from those battles, and so does my memory. Not a day passes when I do not think about those battles and the men and the women I have killed. I wake up in the middle of the night sometimes, and I still see their faces. While they try to haunt me, I would fight them again without question.
All this I did for my family, for my people, and for Saul, my king, the first real ruler of our clans. I was loyal to him. He was my kinsmen. I was a trusted warrior, and I dwelt in his palace.

I was the son of a nobleman of our tribe and serving Saul had been a great privilege at least at one time. Despite all my devotion and loyalty and the pain I endured, all that was taken away from me because of foolish suspicion...
