Description
Mary's twenty - year - old daughter Tonette was out of control. She was talking back, not paying rent, bringing strange men in and out of the house, smoking weed while she was at work, eating everything that wasn't nailed down, and having sex in her bed. One day, after catching her daughter in a cloud of weed smoke, buck naked and having a good time, Mary decides she's had enough. It's time for baby girl to become a woman. It's time for Tonette to get the hell off her property.
Thrust into a cold unfeeling world, Tonette feels she is ready to conquer anything. In truth she is in for a quick and rude awakening. After a series of bad living arrangements, stripping, apathy for the nine to five grind, cat fights, beef with family members, and everyday struggles, Tonette finally finds herself. Tonette knows who she is, yet still struggles to complete the cycle of becoming a well- rounded woman, and doing what is right for her family, children, and community.
"Will her mother ever forgive her for her sins?" "Will she ever forgive her mother for hers?" "Will she ever be a fit mother herself?" "With the odds stacked against sistas, can a black woman rise?" "What happens when a young girl is exposed to the wrong environment and role models?" "What happens when she changes?"
The author is quoted as saying, "Sistas often have to rise from the bottom and go through foolishness to become the greatest version of themselves and live their best lives. This project is about that rough, relentless, and no holds barred journey. This goes out to the Tonette's everywhere. It is inspired by John Singleton's Baby Boy, except for the sistas. Enjoy reading."
