Description
General Letcher turned and put his hand on General Flaville's shoulder. He stared Dick in the eyes. Both Dick and Morris were in the 1st wave hitting the beaches on Iwo Jima in March of 1945. They knew what it was like to leave men where they lay. Thousands of Marines had died on those beaches that day and their bodies couldn't be recovered until the enemy's guns were knocked out. Some of the bodies were never recovered after the tide had washed them out to sea. "Your men are dead, Dick... They'll still be out there in that rice paddie waiting for us when we can get out there again... Sergeant Two Feathers is going to go out to look for men that are missing; men who might still be alive. Their folks deserve to know that the Marine Corps did all that we could do to locate them.
