Description
There have always been Mountain Men.
Their true identities hidden. Their real motives unknown. Until now.
For more than four centuries 'The Mountain Men' have changed the course of human history and, very occasionally, some of them were even quite good at it. Like most things in life, successful revolutions take a bit of practice.
The only thing Mario Peruzzi left behind following his untimely death was a plastic bag full of letters, which was disappointing to those who knew him because he was reportedly worth twelve billion dollars. The FBI were particularly irritated given their plans to seize it. The pile of letters made little sense. Addressed to individuals long since dead, at locations long since demolished. Yet they were the only clue to the missing cash and, as Mario knew full well, an even darker secret - the truth about the Mountain Men.
Dr Ally Oldfield isn't bothered about the money or an ancient order of misogynists. She has enough on her plate with a new job, an exhibition to curate with Lance - her seemingly useless and clumsy intern, busy-body neighbours who don't understand the phrase 'sod off' and a recent intruder who insists she's on the run from the 'FIB'. It's just the beginning of a very bad week.
The theft of a rare and priceless Indian manuscript from the Bodleian Library triggers an international incident. It's an event that pushes the country towards social unrest and impending crisis. The government need a scapegoat and a business card found at the crime scene implicates Ally in the theft. What's more interesting to her are the scribbled initials on the back of the card - T.M.M. Someone is determined to frame Ally for the theft and a series of revolts against the establishment that spark up across the globe. The more she fights to prove her innocence, the more she discovers how these events are connected to her own murky past and a mysterious individual called Radu Goga.
History holds the key to cracking the Mountain Men's code, but success will force Ally to confront her own.
Last of the Mountain Men is the second novel featuring Dr Ally Oldfield after The End of the World is Nigh. This is a standalone novel but readers who loved the first book will be further rewarded in the second.
