Millie Rafferty - The Famine Years. In the first book in the series, when Daniel Rafferty tells his family that they must leave their homeland of Ireland, due to the Potato famine in the mid 1800's, and seek a new life in England in order to survive, his twelve year old daughter Millie knows that her life is about to change forever. Their desperate journey to the port, with only the clothes on their back along with some meagre rations, and across the Irish Sea is fraught with hardship and danger. Landing in Liverpool, Millie, her parents and her two younger brothers struggle to find work and a place to live. Due to sheer hard work and determination, plus help from an unexpected source, life begins to improve, but then tragedy strikes and Millie is forced to take charge and endeavour to provide for her family.
