Amelia is mystified by what ails her. While she regrets miscarrying her second child, she doesn't understand why she hasn't recovered by now. She can barely get out of bed in the morning or care for her young daughter, Mary. And she has no motivation to finish sewing the bonnets she has designed. Most troubling of all, is her marriage. Her husband seems preoccupied with something and she fears the worst. When her aunt Lydia suggests she take a fortnight to stay in the family cottage by the sea, Amelia considers it might be just what she needs to regain her strength. Lydia loves her little Mary and will watch her while she is away, but does Amelia dare go to the cottage alone? She has never been anywhere alone.
David is bewildered how to help his wife. Amelia is not her same energetic self and the midwife's advice to abstain from marital relations is putting a strain on their marriage. He has his own troubles as well, but he feels compelled to shield Amelia from the truth. As he keeps his concerns to himself, inward and outward pressures consume him until he feels the sea's lure begging him to take a long voyage.
Filled with romantic tension between husband and wife and interesting historical characters of the time period, The Captain's Wife is sure to please readers who enjoy historical romance as well as historical fiction.
The author's poem, Cottage by the Sea, is included at the end of the novel.
