I looked into Sonia's eyes, and even though I could see her fear easily enough, there was determination as well.

I had no idea how, but I wasn't going to quit.

I nodded, trying to convey confidence despite the fact I felt nothing like it. She leaned forward and gave me a quick peck.

"It's gonna be okay," she mouthed to me.

"We'll make sure of it," I whispered back.

I no longer gasped for breath, a small mercy, considering everything happening outside the door.

There was another footstep, a man yelled. Unlike the other times, I recognized that he spoke a foreign language.

I closed my eyes and concentrated, trying to pick out a word or two that might help me understand, but I got nothing. I was regularly exposed to other languages while doing research for my blog, but the man spoke too quickly.
