Description

Southern England. Summer. 1940.

A young soldier, Ken Kendrick, is shell-shocked after escaping Hitler's invasion of France. Now stationed near the country town of Sidcup, he is befriended by the Vigar family during a brief respite from duty. Although attracted to Betty, their shy teenage daughter, Ken draws the attention of her glamorous older sister, Ginny. By angering her upper class suitor, Raymond Delafort, a tragic chain of events is set in motion.

After a year of unprecedented victories across Europe, the Nazis expect to defeat the British quickly. The air battle commences and the RAF reels from every blow dealt by the mighty Luftwaffe. As a German bomber ace plans a devastating attack, everyone must face the horror of battle in their very own homes.

How will the Vigars and the Delaforts survive the approaching storm?

Can Ken conquer the horrors that haunt him, before they are made real again by war?

What is Ginny's secret and how far will she go to get what she wants?

Set during the pivotal days of the Battle Of Britain, Waiting for Moonlight is about ordinary people caught up in truly extraordinary times. It's a tale of fear and of hope, of hatred and of love, it's a coming of age story and also history's oldest story... about the best and the worst of human nature.

War has unleashed an ancient hatred, with heartrending consequences for anyone that stands in its way.

'Stories of love, death, subterfuge and cunning unfold together at a fast pace which defies the reader to put the book down. All in all, it's the perfect antidote for all the junk on TV.'

Written with a skillful documentary drama style; Clive Jefferys recreates a bygone world and quickly makes it feel surprisingly familiar. He sits you alongside a Luftwaffe bomber crew, straps you into an RAF fighter and invites you to witness bewildering events unfold in a quiet Kentish town. You meet two very different English families, plunged into conflict as the traditional order of society begins to break down. Their hopes and dreams now matter for so little, as every day becomes a simple fight for survival. Jefferys entwines well-developed, thoroughly real characters within multiple plotlines to keep the reader guessing right to the very end.
