Outpost Arcus is a new Pangaean mining operation on a frozen planet in what today is known as the asteroid belt, located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Arcus is part of a tiny, remote solar system on the outskirts of the known universe. There are no visible signs of intelligent life in the system nor are there detectable electronic emissions.

In search of fresh water, Lieutenants Rucker and Dana, of the massive space tanker TLS Hyperion,travel to the inner planet, P3, soon to be known as Earth. There they are saved and befriended by a family of primitive humans -- who should not exist. The existence of humans so far from their home planet cannot be explained.

Eli , the ancient and somewhat senile humanoid robot the humans worship, is an even greater mystery.

To save the family of humans from an agonizing death, Rucker brings them back to Arcus for medical treatment. Having acted against orders, Rucker must then hire a smuggler ship to return them to Earth, setting off a string of events that dooms Arcus... and slips the hands of time.
