Description
It is 1852 and for twelve-year-old Jesse Turner, life is good for him and his family on their farm in northern Virginia. Their farm is small so his father has no need to participate in the ownership of slaves, but Jesse accepts the common fact that slave ownership is necessary on the larger estates in the area. After witnessing a slave being abused for a minor offense, Jesse starts to wonder if life for them on the surrounding plantations is as fair and just as he's been led to believe. Assured that disciplining slaves, even when harsh, is necessary for everyone's well-being, he allows the incident to fade from his mind.
For Jesse, there is a more pressing issue occupying his mind. He will soon turn thirteen and wishes his parents would treat him more like a young man and less like a child. If given a chance he is sure he could show them what he is capable of and make them proud.
That opportunity arises when Jesse is sent north to Maryland to help his aunt on her farm. Her husband is away working on the new leg of the B & O railroad, so Jesse sees this as a chance to be the man of the house for his aunt and show his worth to her as well as his parents. Never having been away from home, Jesse eagerly heads north to Maryland, expecting adventure and a chance to prove himself.
After arriving in Maryland, Jesse does find adventure but not one he's willing to embrace. An encounter with a runaway slave will flip his world so what he believes was right seems wrong, and what was wrong appears right.
As Jesse struggles with heart held convictions, an outsider rides into town who threatens to destroy him and those he cares about. In a final violent confrontation, Jesse will have to make choices between right and wrong that will change his life forever.
