Description
This book, Siddhartha, set in India circa 500 BCE, is considered one of Hermann Hesse's most powerful novels. It is the story of a very intelligent young boy, Siddhartha, who thirsts for enlightenment and is not satisfied with the ritualistic priestly community life of his father's generation. He leaves his parental home at a young age, with his friend and follower Govinda. They live with the Samanas for some time, leave, and encounter Gautama (Gotama) Buddha and listen to his teachings. Siddhartha knew no teaching can satisfy him - so he strikes his own path in the world, while his friend chooses to follow the Buddha. Siddhartha lives "many lives" immersed in transient pleasures and pains on his way to find enlightenment.
The author Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) was a German-Swiss novelist, poet, and painter. He has several books to his credit. Hesse was awarded the 1946 Nobel Prize for Literature. Siddhartha is considered one of his most powerful books.
