Description
This grieving veterinarian came for a quiet new beginning. Instead, she got Blake Dixon -- the overbearing cowboy who undermines her every move. Too bad the cowboy she wants to strangle might be the only one who understands her pain.
Ashley Carlson never planned to be doing this alone. Losing her husband shattered the life she'd built and left her picking up the pieces as a single mother trying to give her son some sense of normalcy. When her grandfather offers her a position at his veterinary practice, it feels like a lifeline -- a chance to start over somewhere new, somewhere without all the painful reminders.
What she didn't count on was Blake Dixon, the stubborn rancher who seems determined to make her job as difficult as possible. Every appointment at Dixon Ranch turns into a battle, with Blake second-guessing her methods and challenging her expertise at every turn.
Blake Dixon carries the weight of his family's legacy on his shoulders. As the oldest brother, he's spent his life making sure the ranch his father built stays strong, and he's not about to let anyone -- especially some new vet with unconventional ideas -- put it at risk. He does things the tried-and-true way, and that's worked just fine.
Too bad Ashley Carlson doesn't seem to care about his opinions. She's headstrong, stubborn, and completely unwilling to back down. And worst of all? She's proving him wrong more often than he'd like to admit. Not to mention the way she smiles at her son, or the glimpse of vulnerability he sometimes catches behind her determination, is becoming one very distracting problem.
As ranch emergencies force them to work together and long conversations reveal the pain they're both carrying, the walls between them start to crumble. Blake sees past the tough exterior to the grieving woman who's just trying to build a life for her son. And Ashley starts to recognize that Blake's protectiveness comes from a place of deep love and loyalty -- qualities she hasn't let herself hope for in a long time.
Ashley came to town to heal, not to fall for an impossible cowboy. Blake's not looking to risk his heart on someone who could leave. But sometimes the best things in life are the ones we're too scared to reach for.
She's afraid to love again. He's afraid to lose control. Can they let down their guards before their chance at happiness slips away?
