Description
In this work Lightfoot considers how to interpret the phrase "Brethren of the Lord." Throughout the history of biblical interpretation, there has been three major streams of interpretation, the Hieronymian, Epiphanian, and Helvidian. Some have interpreted our Lord's "Brethren" as being biological brothers, others children of Joseph alone, and others as more distant relatives.
Lightfoot considers all of these options in light of the history of biblical interpretation, showing that one can hold to the Perpetual Virginity of Our Lady, while also interpreting scripture in an honest way. Lightfoot here refutes both St. Jerome's interpretation and the heretic Helvidius, showing that Epiphanius' interpretation makes sense out of both the historical and biblical data.
This work is indispensable for anyone interested in the Perpetual Virginity debate, treating biblical and historical data from a reputed biblical and historical scholar.
