Richard Greene, apothecary, antiquarian and museum-keeper extraordinaire, witnesses the chance find of an ancient book, an arcane symbol partially visible on its cover identifying it as a work of ritual magic: A Grimoire.

The provenance and authenticity of the age-old book identify it as an incredibly rare survival - a 'Black Legend', stolen five centuries earlier from the Vatican library, owned - and hidden - by Walter de Langton, a bishop of Lichfield who had stood trial for witchcraft around the year 1300 in Rome.

No one can envisage the approaching cataclysm: the collision of a demonic, stygian past with the presence of the prophet of Reason and the Nobility of untainted Mankind. Greene must fight for more than life itself, burdened with the terrifying knowledge of what 'The Bishop's Grimoire' contains... and seeks.
