Gesellschaftspolitisch brisante Phänomene wie Antisemitismus, Rechtsextremismus und Jugendgewalt sind ohne eine Analyse ihrer unbewussten Dynamiken nicht zu verstehen. Den »subjektiven Bedingungen der objektiven Irrationalität« (Adorno) nachzuspüren, gehört seit ihren Anfängen zu den zentralen Aufgaben der psychoanalytisch orientierten Politischen Psychologie.

Die aufgrund dessen gegründete »Arbeitsgemeinschaft Politische Psychologie« organisierte 2009 die Tagung »Politische Psychologie heute?«, die in diesem Band dokumentiert ist. Diskutiert werden die Bedeutung der politisch-psychologischen Traditionen für die Gegenwart sowie die Möglichkeiten, neuere theoretische und methodische Ansätze aufzugreifen, neue Anwendungsgebiete zu erschließen und somit die Politische Psychologie voranzutreiben.
