Description
Moses Broyles, 1826-1882 was born into slavery and sold at the tender age of four. In this short, largely unknown story, about a 15 minute read, you will learn about a man who overcame great difficulties! He was truly used by God, and eventually became the beloved Pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Indianapolis, Indiana.
In 2018 I was visiting my daughter, Lisa, in Muncie, Indiana. One of my favorite activities, is to go to a small town library and see what cool local information I can turn up. In a book about famous Blacks of Indiana, I found one page devoted to Moses Broyles. I was intrigued! I asked the librarian if there were any other books about him, and was told there was an autobiography he wrote in Indianapolis. Thus began my my three year search, mostly done from Arizona, to try to obtain this book. I discovered there was ONLY ONE COPY! It was in special collections, so not a book that can leave the building. In September of 2021, I made a special trip to libraries in Indianapolis. I was able to obtain a scanned copy of this wonderful story! It has been worth all the effort, and I do believe you will agree! A special thanks to the librarians at Indianapolis Public library who were so helpful. A special thanks to Andrea Glenn, of Indiana State Library in Indianapolis.
