Description
Coffee cake sometimes refers to cake that contains coffee as an ingredient. However, in the United States, this is rarely the case. Instead, it is a type of cake that Americans enjoy eating while they have a cup of coffee.
A typical coffee cake has one layer and is flavored with either fruit or cinnamon. They may be loaf-shaped, for easy slicing or baked in a Bundt or tube pan. They may also feature a streusel or simple glaze topping. Streusel is German for "sprinkle" or "strew" and refers to the popular crumbly topping of butter, flour and sugar.
American coffee cakes originated from Streuselkuchen which is a very similar type of German crumb cake. This crumb cake is served during kaffeeklatsch, which is an informal German social gathering at which coffee is served.
This cookbook contains many traditional as well as unique recipes for coffee cake.
