Description
Ten years ago, I broke his heart. Now he's running for mayor in a town that still isn't ready for men like us.
Kameron: Coming back to Cresson Point wasn't a choice. My father is sick and no one else is going to take care of him. I just need a job and a way to get through this without losing my mind.
I didn't expect the search to end with me sitting across from Abel.
We broke up in college because he couldn't be who he was. Not for me, not for anyone. Now he's a widower with a son and a campaign and I know exactly how this ends.
I tell myself I'm smarter than I was at twenty.
I'm not so sure that's true.
Abel: Since my wife died, it's been me and Dean. My son is seven, has opinions about everything, and has already decided Kameron belongs in our lives.
He's not wrong.
That last part is becoming a problem.
I'm running for mayor. My father is breathing down my neck, and I buried the part of myself that wanted more a long time ago.
Then Kameron walks back into town and I remember exactly what I buried it for.
I know what it would cost Dean if it came out. I know what my father would do. I know all the reasons this is impossible.
I'm not sure I can resist him anyway.
