Allyna Raynore has been having to prove herself her whole life. Not only did she have the shame of being an illegitimate child without a father, she had the worse shame of being one quarter human in the elf nation of Gallnor. She grew up learning to ignore the taunting, and pushed herself to prove that she is as worthy as a full blooded elf. Disregarding the defense force, which all elves are required to join, Allyna enlisted to join the rangers, the elite scouts of the Gallnor military. But beating the odds and becoming a scout in the rangers, still wasn't enough to remove the stain of her heritage, she was constantly pushing herself to prove her worth. Constantly volunteering for patrols, she pushes farther than her mission parameters. Scouting across the border into Krazzar, the orc nation to the north, she follows an orcish patrol and overhears talk of a coming invasion. Driven to find out more, she finds and infiltrates their camp. Sneaking into the commander's tent, she uncovers the orc's plans for a dual invasion of Gallnor with the Efristani Empire, the human kingdom to the south. But before she can get out and return to warn her people, a freak mishap ends up with her being captured.

Major Maxwell Lowe, is the commander of recon team nine, one of the Lavallin Isles elite naval recon units. The fleet his team is stationed with is tasked with containing the troll pirate threat to their shipping lanes operating out of Port Nizi, the only major port of the orcish nation of Krazzar. With the majority of the pirate fleet heading to Port Nizi, it is his mission to scout the port and gather intelligence on what the pirates are up to. On returning from his mission, he encounters orcs with an elf prisoner who has obviously been abused. Although it may be outside his mission parameters, he can't turn his back to this injustice and rescues the prisoner. Learning from the prisoner of the plans for war against the elves, he helps her to return and warn her people. But mistrust between humans and elves is high, and Max ends up being held by the elves as a spy. With war looming that threatens to destroy the elf nation, can humans and elves work together to avoid disaster?

Set in a fantasy world with magic and steam era technology, two elite units must show that humans and elves can get past old prejudices and work together to save a nation. Recon and Rangers.
