About The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

"We're all living in a house called the Money System; and as a result most of us are suffering from a disease called poverty. There's so much the matter with the present system that it's no good tinkering at it. Everything about it is wrong and there's nothing about it that's right."

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a novel by Irish author and house painter Robert Tressell, a pen name for Robert Noonan, first published in 1914. Semi-autobiographical, based on his own experiences of poverty and exploitation, it tells the story of house painter Frank Owen's struggles to find work in the fictional town of Mugsborough.

A scathing indictment of what he saw as the innate greed and dishonesty of the capitalist system, Owen inducts his fellow work mates into the secrets of the 'Great Money Trick'. A classic novel of working-class life, and an impassioned attack of selfish capitalism, Tressell's work makes for a powerful, absorbing literary classic, and an unmissable read.
