Description
Thirteen-year-old Lillis Adley has it all... loving parents, Judith, her best friend since kindergarten, and Papou, her great-grandfather, whom she stays with every summer. Change comes for Lillis in Jr. High when Judith discovers boys and begins a new friendship with Marci, a mature girl that lives in her neighborhood. Feeling like a third wheel, Lillis gradually distances herself from Judith. When Lillis arrives for her summertime visit with Papou, in the type of despair only a teenage girl can comprehend, he reveals the most important friendships in his own life through stories. While there she also meets Hank, a neighbor's grandson and they form an instant bond and become pen-pals.
Beginning with his emigration from Greece in 1911, life in the tenements of New York City, and his eventual journey down to Alabama, Papou paints a picture of friendship set among some of the most prolific events in American history in hopes of spurring Lillis toward a reconciliation with Judith.
With Papou's support and Hank's friendship, Lillis learns the meaning of the truest kind of love.
