The best children's book series included in this collection are Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, Tom Swift and His Undersea Search; Or, The Treasure on the Floor of the Atlantic, The Tale of Grandfather Mole, Uncle Wiggily's Adventures, and Old Mother West Wind.
A serialised version of Five Little Peppers and How They Grew first appeared in an 1880 issue of the kid's magazine Wide Awake. Daniel Lothrop, the magazine's publisher, was such a fan of the stories by Pepper that he married the author in 1881 and issued a hard-cover copy of one of the stories. The Wayside, a residence in ancient Concord, Massachusetts, where Nathaniel Hawthorne and Little Women author Louisa May Alcott had previously lived, became the new home for the couple in 1883.
A Stratemeyer Syndicate product marketed under the "Victor Appleton" house name, the TOM SWIFT SR. series had 38 volumes and two Better Little Books that were produced between 1910 and 1941. The first 35 volumes are typically attributed to Howard R. Garis. Although some sources give John Arthur Almquist credit for volumes # 23, 39, and 40, the latter five titles are said to have been written by Harriet Adams, Edward Stratemeyer's daughter.
