Description

Volume I: The Planting of a Nation in the New World, 1000-1660

Edward Channing's monumental A History of the United States is a six-volume book series that covers the entire history of the United States through 1865, from the early colonization of the Americas to the early 20th century - with the sixth and final volume on the U.S. Civil War winning the Pulitzer Prize for History for its remarkable overview of a critical period in American history.

The history of the United States, of course, begins long before the founding of the nation in 1776. The land that is now the U.S. was first inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years, including the Cherokee, Iroquois, Sioux,. In the 1000s, the first European explorers arrived in the Americas, led by Leif Erikson - a Norse explorer who is thought to have been the first European to have set foot on continental North America, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus.

Yet when Columbus landed in the Caribbean in 1492, this sparked a wave of European exploration and colonization of the Americas. Over the next several centuries, European powers, including Spain, France, and England, established colonies in what would become the United States.

Channing outlines English rule - including Royal control of the new colonies, starting in 1607, the English established the first permanent English settlement in the Americas at Jamestown, Virginia. Over the next several decades, more English colonies were established, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, which would eventually grow to include all of New England.

During this time, tensions between the colonists and the Native Americans grew as more and more land was taken from the indigenous peoples. The colonists also began to establish a system of slavery, importing Africans to work on their plantations. In 1620, the Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts on the Mayflower, seeking religious freedom. They established the Plymouth Colony and were eventually joined by other English Puritans seeking to escape religious persecution.

Channing masterfully outlines a detailed examination of the pre-colonial period, exploring the various Native American cultures that inhabited the continent and the European exploration and colonization that followed. His meticulous research, outstanding primary sources, and judicious judgments have made this work the gold standard for researchers, students, and academics for decades - and is not just a thorough and engaging exploration of the nation's past, but is sure to be of interest to anyone with an interest in American history.
