Kevin Austin is appointed librarian of the mysterious town of Eden moments after the previous librarian is poisoned right in front of him.

Now stuck with a magic ring he can't remove and a library where books talk back, Kevin discovers that "cataloging the collection" includes keeping track of ancient artifacts, managing temperamental ghosts, and occasionally rescuing teenagers from demons in the haunted woods. Oh, and solving murders. That too.

Between dodging assassination attempts from a ghoul who keeps taking the form of his favorite foster mother, fending off a powerful magician who wants his job, and trying to understand why the local diner waitress is so certain they're destined to be a couple, Kevin barely has time to wonder why everyone in town is betting on how quickly he'll die.

With a bit of a snarky attitude and telepathic abilities, Kevin must unravel a conspiracy involving missing books, Las Vegas gambling trips, and a possible approaching apocalypse -- all while trying to keep his hellhound, Fluffy, fed and trying to figure out if he's really the son of the Devil.
