Description
Once upon a time, a brilliant man found a sword sealed deep underground, the shining jewel on the cross-guard depicting a flame inside a gear of ice. The black blade promised power beyond imagination when he placed a hand on it, but his body wouldn't be enough to handle it. Channeling the energy inside, the man created a particle powerful enough to rewrite history. A microscopic type of metal capable of being manipulated to such a degree that people would mistake it for magic. But his ambitions were too big for one man, and after creating a machine capable of terraforming the world, humanity came to an abrupt end.
Land shattered, seas raged, lightning carved craters across the world, cities crumbled to dust, and all progress vanished into nothingness alongside humanity's hubris. Dragons took to the skies, and monsters roamed the shattered streets in a world rewritten by a madman.
Twenty years after the end of the world, Roland Days spends his time painting the tales of his father's heroism and dreaming of legendary swords calling out to him. Thirteen years old, he believes he is ready to tackle the apocalyptic landscapes replacing Earth's countries and become a hero like his father. Unmapped lands await, full of bright treasure and endless tales of adventure.
The idyllic days of fantasizing come to a stop when masked marauders aiming to destroy the remnants of humanity raid his home, bringing blade and flame. Roland is forced to flee, carrying his father's golden sword and his shattered dreams.
In a sick twist of fate, he learns the face beneath their masks is a perfect reflection of his own face, and the monsters are led by the man responsible for ending the world, his ambitions burning brighter than the blasts responsible for the apocalypse.
His dreams are plagued by visions of power. The sword sealed beneath the world beckons him, promising wings of freedom and the power to save the world.
When the wildest dreams of heroism become a responsibility, Roland finds out dreams come with a price. The path to heroism is tiled with unimaginable pain and horrors beyond comprehension. Despite it all, he swears to follow his father's footsteps and find his own sword of legend to forge a path to the future. The old world might be gone, but the human spirit endures, and it shines through in the children born of the machine.
