A spaceship appears over the Dutch city of Amsterdam. The citizens are paralyzed by the shock of the arrival and the realization that humanity is not alone in the universe. Merchant Marine Officer Weber meets the new arrivals with stoic curiosity. He has seen and done everything; an alien ship might just be the latest fashion.

Weber's curiosity turns into dread when people begin to disappear from the city. Why are these people being taken, and what happens to them? Weber soon finds out when he, too, is taken from his home.

A mysterious entity has drafted the missing people to fight a war tearing the galaxy apart. They are put through gruesome preparations for a mission already plagued with casualties.

To make things worse, Weber finds himself in charge of the mission with a crew close to mutiny. Fighting to regain control over the situation, Weber must keep the crew together and finish the mission on time. If he fails, none of them will live to see Earth again.
