Description

Success in sports starts with a mentality... a mentality built upon self-belief, the ability to embrace challenges, and to persist through adversity with relentless determination.

Over the past 17 years I've been honoured to work with some incredibly talented young athletes, their parents, and coaches. During this time what I've come to learn is that success in youth sports is about so much more than just physical performance. It's about building resilience, confidence, and a strong mindset that carries far beyond any playing field. It has been this understanding that has also helped shape my own approach to coaching and led to my national recognition as a two-time nominee for Accredited Sports Scientist of the Year in 2023 and 2024.

The Resilient Young Athlete is the result of my years of experience, and the guide I wish every youth athlete, parent, and coach had -- a powerful blueprint to unlock resilience, build unshakable confidence, and create a future where potential knows no limits.

Packed with actionable strategies, inspiring stories, and science-backed research, this book will help young readers learn how to:

• Develop a growth mindset that thrives on improvement and opportunity

• Conquer doubts, sharpen focus, and maintain composure under pressure

• Set and achieve SMART goals that pave the way to success

• Elevate performance with training and game-day techniques used by the best pro-athletes across sports including soccer, basketball, tennis, track and field, American football and more.

• Handle criticism constructively and turn the tables in your favor

• Embrace the pivotal role of failure and emerge stronger than ever from setbacks

To all the dedicated parents and coaches, I know the pivotal role you play in your young athletes development. That's why I've designed sections of this book specifically for you -- providing the practical strategies needed to help you support your young athlete's mental game.

Alongside these tools, you'll also meet two inspiring young athletes I've had the privilege to work with, and whose powerful stories of perseverance bring these lessons to life.

In the USA, you'll hear from NCHSAA and AAU basketballer Ruben Borg, and in the UK, championship-winning Wrexham FC and Burnley youth academy goalkeeper Kai Calderbank-Park. Their incredible stories of determination, focus, and triumph showcasing the mindset needed to turn dreams into reality.

With a foreword by dual Olympic track and field coach Mel Smith, The Resilient Young Athlete allows readers to create a fully customisable toolkit for building mental toughness. Acknowledging that each athlete's journey is unique, this book is the ultimate guide for anyone involved in youth sports.
